Hawaii Golf Courses
Hilo Golf
Volcano Golf & Country Club Course
Golf on the rim of a volcano! Volcano Golf Course is one of the world’s most unusual courses. Situated on the rim of the active Kilauea volcanic crater, Volcano Golf Course lies in the cool highlands 4,000 feet above the sea, with sweeping vistas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (both snowcapped in winter). The course is 18 holes, par 72, and a total of 6,547 yards of playing area. Located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a scenic 30-mile drive from Hilo, the course also offers a full restaurant and bar.
Kona Golf
Golf Mauna Lani Resort
The North Course is built on a lava bed much older than the Kaniku flow and is characterized by rolling terrain punctuated by Kiawe (mesquite) forsests. No. 17, a par three tucked into a natural lava amphitheater, is the resort’s second signature hole and a favorite “I was here” photo spot. A 230-acre protected archaeological district lies on the northern boundary of the course and herds of feral goats can be spotted on the course moving from hole to hole throughout the day. The South Course, renowned as the former home to the annual Senior Skins Game from 1990-2000, snakes through the stark, rugged a’a lava of the prehistoric Kaniku lava flow. Besides great golf, the course offers a panorama on mountain and ocean views. The South Course is also home to No. 15, one of the most photographed over-the-water golf holes in the world.
Hapuna Golf Course
Enjoy one of the best views of the spectacular Kohala Coast from the new Hapuna Golf Course, an Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay design. This 18-hole championship golf course is nestled in rolling natural foothills that go from the shoreline to about 700 feet above sea level. The course offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean while majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kohala Mountains form the backdrop of an unforgettable links-style experience.
Golf Big Island Country Club
Golf on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2,000 feet above the Pacific in a beautiful mountain environment. Rolling fairways and numerous water hazards make this a challenging course for all level of players. The undulating bent grass greens are in excellent condition and the signature par 3, 17th hole, features a true island green. Like the Volcano and Waimea courses, Big Island Country Club is at a higher elevation so don’t forget some warmer clothes.
Maui Golf
Elleair Maui Golf Course
A 6,404-yard par-71 championship layout, Elleair features expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, Haleakala, and the West Maui Mountains. In winter months humpback whales may be seen playing offshore. The course was designed by Canadian course architect Bill Newis. With many reachable par-5s, a mix of ling and short par-3s, and par-4s that call for both a fade and a draw, Elleair brings the trades brilliantly into play from every angle. Holes play into and downwind, from left-to-right, and from right-to-left. You can run your approach onto roughly half of the holes at Elleair. With exquisite views from every hole, Elleair is one of the best public courses in Hawaii.
The Dunes At Maui Lani
The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course is laid out “much like Royal Troon”, according to course architect Robin Nelson. There isn’t another site like Maui Lani anywhere else in the world. The terrain upon which The Dunes is built is prime, unspoiled linksland – millon-year old alluvial sand dunes – almost prehistoric in nature. Holes weave up and down, through and around 60 foot-high sand dunes located in the heart of central Maui, in what is known as the Kahului Isthmus. It is here that two ancient volcanoes met to form Maui, “The Valley Isle”. Golfers in search of a total Maui golf experience are encouraged to visit The Dunes.
Golf At Wailea
Rated as one of the best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, the Wailea Emerald is akin to a lush tropical playground. But don’t be fooled by the Emerald’s pleasant appearance. It is a superbly designed course created for pure golf enjoyment, regardless of one’s handicap. Measuring 6,825 yards from the back, the Emerald features four to six tee boxes on every hole, allowing players to tailor the course to their playing level. Notable features include a large double green shared by holes No. 10 and No. 17. Fronting the green is the only lake on the course. The Wailea Gold Course is the most challenging of Wailea’s trio and home to the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., it has been ranked among the country’s best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and one of the world’s best designed by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. The Gold’s 200-foot elevation change from top to bottom enhances the numerous ocean and mountain vistas available from virtually every hole. The course has been labeled a “thinking player’s” course because it demands strategy and careful club selection to be played well.
Kauai Golf
Golf At Kauai Lagoons – Kiele Golf Course
Just a five-minute shuttle ride from port, the spectacular Kiele Course (pronounced key-eh-lay) was designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Kiele weaves its way through mango tree forests, around 40 acres of fresh water lagoons, and alongside sheer ocean cliffs. Rated a Gold Medal Resort by Golf Magazine and a top 100 course by Golf Digest, Kiele is both challenging and fair, with ocean vistas few courses can match. Along with a fully stocked golf shop and friendly staff, golf at the Kiele Course presents a memorable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
PUAKEA GOLF COURSE
Imagine playing golf with the Pacific Ocean stretched out before you and Mount Haupu towering above. This isn’t a dream…this is Puakea Golf Course. Designed by Robin Nelson, Hawaii’s most prolific golf course architect, Puakea plays around deep ravines and over streams fed by fresh mountain rains. So serene is the backdrop, you can get lost in the joys of the game. But don’t let your mind wander too far, because Puakea can be every bit the challenge you seek. Nelson’s masterful architecture clearly conveys the routes one should take to achieve textbook pars. However, those more daring will be tempted with hints of ways to achieve glorious birdies and a truly memorable round of golf.
Poipu Bay Golf Course
Even the most focused golfer will be challenged by breathtaking views from each and every hole at Poipu Bay. The course is backed by lush emerald mountains and sculpted from a rolling plateau eight stories above the expansive blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Nestled among the gentle contours of Poipu Bay you’ll discover the remains of Hawaii’s heiau (temples) and ancient stonewalls. If this weren’t challenge enough, the nature of Poipu Bay presents you with one distraction after another…from native Nene geese and rare Hawaiian monk seals to green sea turtles and humpback whales. You’ll have lots of excuses to back your scorecard. Then, of course, there’s the view!
